Beautifully written。 I loved the family dynamics and poetic flow。 I felt all the emotions。 An enthusiastic 5 stars。

3。5 stars。 I’m on a roll with sad sports books。 While this felt young it was still good。 I enjoyed all the terminology but felt the definitions of words/phrases starting the chapters was a little much for me。 Every chapter too?? Eh。 But all in all i enjoyed this。
Savannah Lacey,
I really liked the book! I love how it is written and the action that happens!

I enjoyed this YA book。 It managed to touch on grief, family dynamics, girls and hard work。 All of it done in a way that definitely made me feel like I was at a family cookout。 Looking forward to finishing the series。

All is fair in love and basketball。 The crossover begins with “a bolt of lightning”。 Throughout the book, the author, Kwame Alexander uses poetry to mimic the fire and passion of a basketball game。 Most of the events take place at Reggie Lewis Junior High, as Josh navigates through the curveballs of life。The book covers the life of Josh Bell at a time when the status of relationships changes as people grow up, and whether or not an unbreakable bond is truly long-lasting is called into question。 All is fair in love and basketball。 The crossover begins with “a bolt of lightning”。 Throughout the book, the author, Kwame Alexander uses poetry to mimic the fire and passion of a basketball game。 Most of the events take place at Reggie Lewis Junior High, as Josh navigates through the curveballs of life。The book covers the life of Josh Bell at a time when the status of relationships changes as people grow up, and whether or not an unbreakable bond is truly long-lasting is called into question。 As Josh and his twin brother, Jordan continue their team’s winning streak, things start to take a turn for the worse。 Their brotherhood is tested when Jordan meets the new girl at school。 Josh quickly learns that everything isn’t anything but net。 The author notably develops the shift in the two characters’ dynamic by using various forms of figurative language, that helps readers paint a mental picture of what is happening in the story, and a mixture of short and long sentences, to create rhythm and emphasis。 All to convey the message, that life’s a game and the ball is in your court。 The message of this book was clear。 Relationships come and go, but family is forever。 The connection between Josh and his brother stood out to me, but the wedge that was shoved between them was even more intriguing。 Because, when graced with great devastation, they came together despite their differences。 I believe that Alexander wanted to capture the story of family, dedication, and loyalty, the elements of a strong relationship。This book is sincere, passionate, and moving, a slam dunk。 I would recommend this book to anyone, it will hit just as hard as a crossover, and then you may feel just like “Da Man”。 。。。more

This is not a book I expected to enjoy as much as so did because sports are。。。not my thing。 And it really is a book about basketball。 But it is also a book about family and growing up and growing apart and growing together。 I teared up on the last page, which is pretty rare for me。 Definitely a worthy Newbery win!
Monica McCracken,
Excellent read。 I always thought this would only appeal to teen boys, but I loved it! Written in various forms of poetry, this book covers twin brothers and their relationship with their dad and their love for basketball。 Somehow, this short book manages to deal with sports, love, life, death, and family。 Great for reading aloud but also neat to read and see how the author structures the sentences。 The boys are in middle school and the book is free from objectionable elements。

This is a story about Josh and the life and struggles of a 12-year-old basketball player。 Josh is an identical twin。 His brother's name is JB。 Josh's dad was a basketball superstar in his former years。 The twins both love basketball, especially Josh。 He wants to be just like his father。 He wants to follow directly in his footsteps。 Basketball for him isn't just about being like his dad, he really does truly love basketball。 Josh begins to have really strong emotions when JB stops hanging around This is a story about Josh and the life and struggles of a 12-year-old basketball player。 Josh is an identical twin。 His brother's name is JB。 Josh's dad was a basketball superstar in his former years。 The twins both love basketball, especially Josh。 He wants to be just like his father。 He wants to follow directly in his footsteps。 Basketball for him isn't just about being like his dad, he really does truly love basketball。 Josh begins to have really strong emotions when JB stops hanging around him and Chuck because he has a new girlfriend。 One day, JB accidentally cuts off five of Josh's dreadlocks and he has to shave his head。 This leads to some serious resentment toward JB。 On top of all of this, the daily struggles of a middle school athlete, Chuck (Josh's father) takes a huge health decline。 He starts having nosebleeds and mini heart attacks。 This is just too much for a young kid to hold in。 Josh and JB are in the middle of a basketball game, when Josh loses it and throws a pass at JB as hard as he can and hits him right in the face and breaking his nose。 Because of this, JB starts giving Josh the cold shoulder。 This event really took a toll on the brother's relationship。 Josh's father ends up having a massive heart attack and this puts him in the hospital。 Seeing his father like that really made Josh see that his father isn't invincible。 I mean he was only 39。 Some time passes and Chuck has two more massive heart attacks, the second one leads to his ultimate demise。 Their father's passing made Josh realize that even though all of these things are happening, he just lost his father, that his brother is still there, he still has him。 After talking with JB he realizes that JB is feeling the same way, and the boys' relationship is rekindled。 The brothers realize that all they have is each other。 This is a story about heart break, loss, grief, and emotional journey through the mind of a middle school athlete。 The rhythmic writing is absolutely wonderful and really sets the tone for the book。 I loved the writing style。 I would definitely recommend this book to teachers for a class book。 。。。more

Readers can look forward to a exiting story with much figurative language。 。。。more
